CAMP Illness prevention POLICIES

Piedmont Wildlife Center takes reducing the spread of respiratory viruses (COVID-19, the flu, RSV) very seriously. We have strong steps in place to provide the safest possible environment for all our program participants, staff, and volunteers. Our first rule at PWC is respect: respect yourself, respect others, and respect nature. Please understand, if campers are unable to abide by this safety protocol, they will not be allowed to attend our camps.

We will continue to monitor guidance from the CDC and make decisions based on what is best for our community. Thank you for helping keep our community healthy.

BEFORE CAMP:

We ask that campers bring a mask in case they will be indoors or otherwise within close quarters.

If a camper tests positive for a respiratory virus they must:

  • Stay home until both are true:

    • Symptoms are improving overall

    • The camper has no fever for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication

  •  Wear a well-fitting mask for five days after they return to camp

If a camper is exposed to someone who has tested positive for a respiratory virus they must:

  • Wear a well-fitting mask for five days after exposure, regardless of vaccination status

  • If the camper starts showing symptoms, stay home until symptoms improve

* Exposure is sharing a household or having close contact with anyone with a respiratory virus or who has symptoms of a respiratory virus.

Important: Some allergy symptoms are similar to respiratory virus symptoms. If your camper displays any of these symptoms, we will ask that they return home and get tested. Once you can show us the negative test results, then your child can return to camp.

DURING THE DAY:

  • We ask that all participants pack masks in case they will be indoors or are unable to socially distance themselves.

  • All activities will be done outdoors. In the case of severe weather, campers will be brought to the staff cabin or visitor center (Durham) or the outdoor shelters (Wake and Orange). Campers may be asked to wear a mask while indoors depending on the size of the group.

  • If a camper shows signs/symptoms of a respiratory virus during the day at camp, their parent/guardian will be contacted. The camper will be monitored and isolated until the parent/guardian can pick them up.

WHAT IF?

If there is a confirmed case of a respiratory virus among campers or staff participating in the program, camper families will be notified by the camp. We will follow the latest CDC guidelines for future protocols.
