This program is in partnership with Mauri Connors, who has a background in Parent-and-Me programs at Brooklyn Forest and Boxwood Nature Center. She provides a guided experience that follows a structure that allows for individual exploration in caregiver-child pairs and also brings the whole group together to promote a contemplative dance community. We will sing, explore nature and different sensory experiences, and use creative movement exploration to grow fine and gross motor skill development.

Winter Solstice Celebration

Join Piedmont Wildlife Center on Saturday, December 16th for our annual Winter Solstice Celebration!

During this relaxed outdoor event, we'll gather around the fire with new and old friends at Leigh Farm Park. We will provide marshmallows, s'mores fixings, and hot beverages, and you'll have the opportunity to reflect on the past year and set intentions for 2024. Walk a labyrinth made of natural materials, design your own paper lantern, and enjoy a sunset walk around the park. Then warm up by visiting our Ambassador Animals in the cabin!

All ages welcome. Admission is free, though we encourage you to consider making a $10 donation to help support our mission of connecting people and nature.

We will have some vegan- and allergen-friendly options available, though we encourage you to bring your own s'mores supplies or tea if you have dietary restrictions. RSVP encouraged (via our Facebook event) but not required.

Help us help the Earth! Please bring your own reusable mug so we can minimize waste.

Come learn all about Piedmont Wildlife Center and some of the animals that call PWC home. We'll get the chance to meet 5-6 native North Carolina species including reptiles, mammals and birds of prey. Participants will get the opportunity to touch a few of our animals (birds of prey cannot be touched due to safety reasons), ask questions and learn about our backyard neighbors. This is an outdoor program at our uncovered, outdoor amphitheater so please come prepared for the weather. In the event of heavy rain or severe weather, we will reschedule the program. Each family must sign our liability waiver in order to participate in our in-person programming. Program is limited to 30 total participants, including chaperones and siblings. Pre-registration required at $10/person.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the outdoor and wooded nature of our programs, some parts of the program/tour will be inaccessible to wheelchairs, walking aids and those with additional mobility concerns. Since we are on a City of Durham park, we are limited in the improvements and additions we can implement. Wild Canvas

Piedmont Wildlife Center's ambassador animals are ready for their close-ups! During this unique, one-hour event, we will have some of our animals out and ready to be photographed, sketched or painted. We will have owls, hawks and reptiles for participants to view during the event. Participants will get the chance to see wildlife up-close and learn about conservation, all while practicing their favorite hobby/skill! Please plan to bring your own materials. The event will take place at the front of our cabin, which is about a ~1/4 mile walk from the parking lot.

Those 18 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult or guardian. Please register the adult/guardian as a participant.

Summer Solstice Celebration

On June 24th, Piedmont Wildlife Center is welcoming more than the summer season. We're welcoming YOU back to our cabin!

Join us at Leigh Farm Park on Saturday, June 24th from 1-3 PM for our Summer Solstice Celebration. Visit our reptile and mammal Ambassador Animals in the cabin, which will be open to visitors for the first time since 2020. Marvel at our new mural by artist Sarah Pritchard, shop PWC t-shirts and other merch at our pop-up Nature Store, and celebrate the unveiling of PWC's very own Little Free Library. Then head over to Fox Circle for some quiet reflection... before joining in an exciting camp game or birds of prey tour!

All ages are welcome at this FREE event. Suggested donations of $10/family will support our conservation and education programs. We'll also be accepting donations of books related to nature, wildlife, and/or our core values (gratitude, respect, curiosity, inclusivity, awareness) for our Little Free Library.

Light refreshments will be provided. It will likely be hot, so bring your reusable water bottle!

PLEASE NOTE: While our cabin is wheelchair accessible, some outdoor spaces at this event may be inaccessible to wheelchairs, walking aids, and those with additional mobility concerns. Come learn all about Piedmont Wildlife Center and the research we do with box turtles! During your Turtle Trek, you'll get the chance to learn about radio telemetry, mark and recapture method and data collection. Try your hand at finding a box turtle in the woods by only using a radio signal! At the end of your turtle trek, meet one of our resident box turtles up close.

This is an outdoor, off-trail walking adventure. Please come prepared to trek through the woods and come prepared for the weather. Potential hazards we may encounter could include: ticks, poison ivy, barbed wire, venomous snakes, spiders and insects.

Pre-registration required at $10/person. Each family must sign our COVID and liability waiver in order to participate in our in-person programming. This experience is limited to 5 total participants:

Family Foraging Class

Join Owen Doll on a 1.5 mile walk through Duke forest, near Hillsborough, for an introduction to foraging and meeting some wonderful woodland plants and hopefully some mushrooms. The walk will have frequent stops at the plants of interest. Parts of the trail are pretty sunny and can be hot on warmer days, but probably not stopping much in that section.

We will meet in the Weaver Street Parking area in Hillsborough then caravan to the Duke forest access as it is difficult to find on your own. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes to walk in the woods along with sunscreen, hat, bug spray, water and materials for journaling, taking notes or photos!

20th Anniversary Celebration!

Celebrate 20 years of nature connection - and raise a glass to the next 20!

Join us at the Durham Armory on Friday, January 20th (7:30-10:00 PM) to celebrate two decades of nature connection. Enjoy live bluegrass music, heavy hors d’oeuvres, door prizes, animal meet-and-greets, and more as we tell the story of PWC’s journey from a small wildlife hospital to an award-winning environmental education nonprofit serving thousands each year.

Early bird tickets ($75/person) available until December 1st, when general admission will become $100/person. VIP tickets ($150/person) include reserved seating at our VIP tables, plus early admission at 6:30 PM for drinks with PWC Executive Director Karen McCall and PWC founder Bobby Schopler.

Join us on Saturday, June 25th from 4:30-7:30 PM at Leigh Farm Park for our inaugural Summer Solstice Reunion. Reunite with old friends, make new ones, and celebrate the start of summer as we eat good food, play camp games, and share our love of nature connection.

This is a potluck celebration, so bring your favorite snack, side dish, or dessert! We'll provide hamburgers and hotdogs (including vegan options) and grill them for everyone to enjoy.

Owl Prowl

Join PWC's Gail Abrams on a nocturnal hike at Mason Farm. Resident owls are finding their mates and are more active and engaging this time of year. Gail will do her best owl impressions in hopes of getting a reply. If we're lucky, we'll catch a glimpse of a wild owl.

During your one mile walking journey, you'll learn all about owls, their habitats and enjoy a rare chance to explore Mason Farm after dark. After the hike, you'll meet some of PWC's own owl ambassadors up-close!

Masks recommended. Ages 7+, must be able to walk slowly along a flat, 1 mile unpaved path at night with the possibility of very cold temperatures. The $25/person program fee goes directly to providing care for our birds of prey including vet visits, food and maintenance of their outdoor enclosures.
