Introducing our newest raptor ambassadors!
Learn more about our THREE new raptors - then donate to vote on their names this GivingTuesday!
1. Juvenile Red-shouldered hawk
Our first new bird is a juvenile red-shouldered hawk! He was found on the ground after having fallen from the nest. Someone noticed that he remained on the ground for days and became concerned since he was not yet old enough to fledge.
He was rescued by Nature's Nanny Wildlife Rehabilitation in VA who discovered that he had eye damage possibly caused by his fall. Because of his injuries, his vision is impaired and he is unable to hunt well enough to survive in the wild. He arrived at PWC in October 2022.
This Mystery Bird’s name will be either Hank, Maple, or Oakley. But the final decision is up to YOU!
2. Eastern screech owl (red morph)
Our second new bird is an eastern screech owl! Eastern screech owls come in two colors, called morphs. This bird is a red morph, like our other screech owl Otus!
He was rescued in VA by Nature's Nanny Wildlife Rehabilitation after colliding with the side of a van. His accident left him with head trauma and a permanent left eye injury, making him unable to properly hunt in the wild. He arrived at PWC in October 2022.
This Mystery Bird’s name might be Arlo, Butternut, or Gizmo. Donate to our GivingTuesday fundraiser to vote on your favorite!
3. Tony the great-horned owl
Thanks to the same donor who’s pledged a $3,000 match this GivingTuesday, our third new bird already has a name: Tony! Tony is a great-horned owl and is named after a certain cereal mascot. Why this name? Great-horned owls are sometimes called tigers of the woods!
Tony was found as a juvenile in Newport News, VA. Someone noticed he had been on the ground for two weeks and called Nature's Nanny Wildlife Rehabilitation. X-rays revealed a bent and previously fractured right wing, making Tony unable to fly. He arrived at PWC in October 2022.
Help us feed Tony and our other Mystery Birds for their first year (and unlock a $3,000 match) by donating on GivingTuesday!
