Biological Inventory

Leigh Farm Park is a critical biological buffer zone that links a chain of ecosystems across the Piedmont region, maintaining a wildlife corridor across central North Carolina and beyond.

Piedmont Wildlife Center staff, associated scientists, and volunteers are currently surveying the flora and fauna Leigh Farm Park utilizing radio telemetry, trail cameras, and GPS/GIS, and JMP software (in partnership with WildTrack). The goal of this ongoing inventory is to create a holistic assessment of biodiversity at Leigh Farm Park. This information shapes our education and outreach programs in support of biodiversity in the greater Piedmont area.

Box turtle research

Our partnerships with the Box Turtle Connection and WildTrack and our citizen science initiative,Triangle Turtle Trekkers, are all efforts to investigate the status and behavior of the eastern box turtle, a species in decline. Our goal is to use the data collected from these projects to inform and improve conservation efforts for our state reptile.
