Tracking Classes

Beyond the Elders of Tracking

These 4 classes are follow-ups to the Tracking Intensives offered last Autumn, geared towards folks with some familiarity with the 6 elders, or questions, of tracking: Who was this? What were they doing? When were they here? Why were they here? Where did they go? How were they feeling? These subjects stand on their own, though, so here’s another chance to delve into the mysterious world of tracking if you missed the intensives, and a chance to go deeper if you attended any of the intensives. Bring a notebook and a pencil, and expect some very light (I promise!) homework.

Beyond Tracking 1: Spirit
Sunday, February 12th
2:00pm – 4:00pm

Native trackers didn’t just rely on their observations to track; they trusted impressions and they followed “gut feelings.” This class will focus on games and exercises that help us explore this “sixth sense” and how it relates to tracking.
Beyond Tracking 2: Substrate Study
Sunday, February 26th
2:00pm – 4:00pm

This class focuses specifically on the mediums on which we track, the paper on which stories are written. We’ll learn about the different substrates around us and how to read what is written on them.
Beyond Tracking 3: Techniques of Tracking
Saturday, March 11th
2:00pm – 4:00pm

Here’s where we hone our tracking skills by practicing techniques as obvious as not stepping on the tracks, and as subtle as manipulating light and shadow, and knowing which eye to have open or closed to see tracks and dust compressions even on hardwood floors.
Beyond Tracking 4: Coyote Teaching
Sunday, March 25th
2:00pm – 4:00pm

One of my favorite mammals to track actually teaches us how to teach, how to share what we’ve learned, in subtle yet engaging ways, through his behavior and habits. The tradition of tracking has been passed down through countless generations. This class focuses on how to share what we’ve learned in the trickster tradition.
