Survival Intensives
This survival series breaks the priorities of survival—shelter, water, fire, and food—into 4 intensives, each 4 hours long, allowing us to focus more and go much deeper into these subjects than ever before. These intensives are designed to complement and build on each other, but also offer plenty of great instruction for folks that can’t attend all the classes.
Survival 1: Shelter Sunday, January 8th 1:00pm – 5:00pm Some form of shelter is of the highest priority in a survival situation. We’ll spend these 4 hours learning how to choose a good location and how to be prepared, from clothes to camping gear to completely primitive shelters. Expect plenty of hands-on, direct experience—building everything from debris huts and duff beds, to lean-tos and wickiups.
Survival 2: Water Sunday, January 15th 1:00pm – 5:00pm The second highest priority in a survival situation is finding good water, and this information can be the hardest to come by! Join us for this unique class on a subject seldom taught as we explore solar stills, tapping trees and vines, transpiration, indicator species, boiling methods, water-borne diseases, filtering and flavoring, and other techniques for staying hydrated in the woods.
Survival 3: Fire Sunday, January 22nd 1:00pm – 5:00pm Arguably, fire is the third highest priority in a survival situation. It keeps us warm, purifies our water, and makes available many foods that shouldn’t be eaten raw. We’ll explore many firebuilding and firemaking techniques, including tools that you can bring with you, and fun ways of starting electrical, chemical, and solar fires, and my favorite, primitive methods! I hope to have everyone leave with a bow-drill set, so bring a sturdy, sharp knife.
Survival 4: Food Sunday, January 29th 1:00pm – 5:00pm The last survival priority is food, but don’t be fooled! Your energy begins to wane quickly, making everything else very difficult. So food collecting should happen constantly in a survival situation, and takes the most practice! We’ll explore edible plants and mushrooms, traps, hunting methods, cooking techniques, fishing, tracking…Food is a BIG SUBJECT! Bring a knife and a willingness to try things you may have once stopped your dog from eating. Never pass up energy!
