11-14 year olds:
Otter Clan
June 24-30
This is an introduction to backpacking for younger teens with a sense of adventure. We are sending our most experienced counselors to help facilitate a heart filled excursion in the wilderness. It is designed to be an introductory experience for teens who wish to learn the skills of backpacking and wilderness living. Come explore trout filled mountain streams, winding trails waterfalls, and rock outcroppings. Experience the clear mountain air, dappled sunshine and uncommon plants and animals of the southern Appalachians. We will meet at Wilson Creek, North Carolina to embark upon a week of wilderness living and backpacking. The drop off point will be at Grag Prong, about 3.5 hours away from Durham. We meet on Sunday and pick up on Saturday.
Cost: $550 for weeklong overnight experience. Campers provide their own backpacks and sleeping bags
14-18 year olds:
Bear Clan
August 12-18
This is a backpacking trip designed for older teens in which we will hone our skills in wilderness living. Come ready for a transformative experience that could be life changing. A central part of this experience is that we will work on building a tribe in which we can share stories and deep wilderness adventures. We will practice wilderness skills such as friction fire, longmatches, edible plants, and more. We will do a night drumstalk and an optional overnight solo in the mountains. This is designed to be a challenging but rewarding experience. It is a powerful way to connect to nature and to our own inner nature. Our excursion will take place at Grayson Highlands located near Wilson, Virginia. It is a beautiful mountain area with balds, blueberries, wild ponies, sunsets, sunrises, star-filled night skies, and mountain streams. It is about 3.5 hours away.
