BioBlitz 2017

Join us for our 4th Annual BioBlitz!

Friday, May 19: 6pm – 10pm
Saturday, May 20: 7am – 4pm

What is a BioBlitz?

Think of a BioBlitz as an epic nature scavenger hunt. We will have expert naturalists and volunteers on-site to search Leigh Farm Park for as many species as possible in less than 24 hours. In years past we have documented brand new species to both North Carolina and to the United States! What will we find this year?

Join us and be amazed by the biodiversity that you can find in your own backyard. Don’t know anything about science? Don’t worry! At this free event, you can learn all about who and what lives in your backyard, meet some of our native wildlife ambassadors, become a scientist in the great outdoors, track a box turtle in the woods, play in the creek, and more!

This casual event is a great place to get your feet wet in the science world and can teach you ways to give back to the Earth.

Friday, May 19: 6pm – 10pm

Starting at 6pm, help catch moths for identification, learn frog calls and then hike out for frog surveying, meet owls and go on an owl prowl – and then make s’mores by our campfire!

Saturday, May 20: 7am – 4pm

Find our summer birds, meet hawk and an opossum, track a turtle through the woods, learn about mushrooms, meet other organizations (make a terrarium, meet wildlife, learn about environmental laws), get your face painted, and much more!

New for 2017: Learn how micro-organisms flavor beers, and try samples from the new Brewery Bhavana! They will be present from 11am – 3pm.

Lunch on Saturday provided by Marco’s Pizza (11am-2pm) – Cash Only Please!
Nature Store on Saturday will sell t-shirts, nature-themed jewelry, water bottles, and more.

Schedule of Events:

If you want to come at a specific time, check out the schedule of Inventory Hikes! Our inventory hikes are led by expert naturalists, but we encourage guests to join on the hikes. This is a great way to immerse yourself in nature and learn from the experts themselves.

Our Educational Programs will teach you as much as we can about our native wildlife and the ecosystems they inhabit.
