Congratulations to our Environmental Leadership Award Winners!
Youth Award: Micah Segal-Miller, Chapel Hill High School
The winner of our Youth Environmental Leadership Award is Micah Segal-Miller. Micah is currently a student at Chapel Hill High School. He has been a CIT (or counselor in training) at PWC for the last 4 years and has a special way of connecting with children in camp, so that even the most nervous children feel comfortable. Micah has grown tremendously in the last 4 years and has shown initiative in taking on larger roles as a CIT. This includes developing a training handbook, mentoring other CITS (which includes teaching them all about nature), coordinating CIT meetings, and assisting in the coordination of a Teen Leadership Camp. Micah has also applied to go to Duke University in hopes of pursuing a career in the environmental field. Micah’s positive attitude and the leadership skills he has shown at his age, are part of the reason why he is receiving the award for Youth Environmental Leadership Award!
Adult Award: Brian Bockhahn, Interpretation & Education Specialist with NC State Parks
Brian is a former state park ranger, and is now an interpretation and education specialist with the NC State Parks.
He is invested in educating the public about our environment and also has amazing knowledge of our local fauna. He has participated in BioBlitzes across the state, including the past two BioBlitzes at PWC where he discovered new insect species to NC and to the US! He is the leader of the raptor migration count at Hanging Rock State Park and Pilot Mountain. He tags monarch butterflies to determine population estimates, and is one of the few people in the state who knows practically everything about moths! He frequently volunteers his time to help educate the public and to conserve our native wildlife.
For these reasons, and many more (like that he is the only person to complete all of the trails in NC State Parks, for a total of 618.6 miles) he is the winner of our Adult Environmental Leadership Award!
Business Award: Fullsteam Brewery
Since 2010, sustainability has been at the core of Fullsteam Brewery’s mission. If you know much about beer, it’s not the most eco-friendly business. A lot of energy, water, and resources go into a pint of beer; however, Fullsteam has attempted to make it more sustainable. They are part of Duke Energy’s Small Business Energy saver program which installed LED lights throughout their building. They have worked with waste reduction partners and now offer compostable cups and compost bins, but also re-use these cups whenever possible. They recycle everything they can, including mylar bags used to store hops. They understand the reduce, reuse, recycle mantra and focus on the top priority, which is reduction.
They consistently support environmental organizations around the Triangle, including PWC. Most recently, they held a “Sustainable Sunday,” which celebrated Don’t Waste Durham and encouraged food trucks to obtain sustainability certification.
For these reasons and more, Fullsteam Brewery is awarded with the Business Environmental Leadership Award! Owner, Sean Lilly-Wilson, is accepting this award.
“Waking April’s self-titled EP embodied all that they are as musicians. The melodic hooks and innovative harmonizations embodied who they are as musicians and the direction they want to head with their music. I recommend any indie/rock fans pick up this EP and expect great things in the future for this dynamic duo.” Review by Kelly McNeil and Carter Allison
Waking April has existed through many lineup changes and genre changes. Musical and romantic couple Bethany McGeHee and Alex McKee began playing music together years before they decided to form the band. Now taking on an indie-pop sound, their songs still remain as catchy, meaningful, and powerful as they ever have been.
They have recently welcomed third member Joy Perniciaro into the fold. Together, the trio has developed a harmonically dense and simultaneously intimate sound. Their songs remain dynamic and complex as the trio grows in confidence and popularity.
Mebanesville–the best in roots, rhythm and world music from the roads we travel–all that flows, all that waits, all that’s bound up or escapes, including Roots Rhythm Jigs Jive Rock Pop Polk Jazz Trad True Blue Brown Black Green White and Read-all-over!
Mebanesville began in the spring of 2000 as a close network of longtime neighbors and friends playing an informal Friday evening music session at a coffee bar in Mebane, NC. Soon people were inviting the musicians to play for private parties and special events. The players took the name Mebanesville – Mebane’s name in the 18th and 19th centuries–to reflect their love of living locally but exploring music globally. Mebanesville’s violin, accordion, pennywhistle, recorder, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, voice and percussion weave an emotional tapestry that evokes private memories and timeless states of mind proven to lift your attitude and move your feet.
The artistic passions and creative vision of the charter Mebanaires–Jamey Tippens, Larry Vellani, Nettie Lassiter, Peggy Boswell, Sarah Rubin and Sherry White Lea–mapped the original Mebanaire musical landscape; succeeding players and personalities have continued to enrich and diversify the journey and the audience experience.
Meboriginal, Larry Vellani, has performed with some of the recent generations’ most respected interpreters of social and narrative song, including Guy and Candy Carawan, Barbara Dane, Fran McKendree, Mimi Fariña, Ronnie Gilbert, Beverly Grant, Si Kahn, Michela Musolino, Holly Near, Bruce Phillips and Baldemar Velasquez. He also has performed with some of the Southeast’s most renowned traditional musicians, including Lonny Austin, Marvin Gaster, Tommy Jarrell, Lauchlin Shaw, Paul Taylor and Joe Thompson.
