white caucasian Man takes aim with a recurve bow in the forest Stock Photo - 9799472This club is designed to teach members how to shoot a traditional bow, using many time-honored techniques.  We will use different and unusual targets that you won’t see anywhere else.  Here, you will learn finger-drawing techniques, from the Mediterranean loose to the Apache draw to styles of thumb draw used in Mongolia, China, and Japan.  You will learn just how surprisingly difficult it is to aim a traditional bow without a sight or a scope.  We will demonstrate instinctive shooting, point-of-aim or gap-shooting, and string-walking, to name but a few.  We will teach you how to find a firm anchor point that is suited to your bow and your body.  You will learn proper posture, and what we mean when we say “I cant.”  All of these techniques will be taught in a friendly and supportive club environment to help you achieve your dreams of hitting that perfect bullseye with nothing more than a stick, a string, and a lot of skill.

  1. I don’t currently own a bow. Where would be a good place to buy & get fitted with an appropriate bow for my size & strength in the Chapel Hill/Durham area?

    • NC Hunter Supply in Raleigh is a great place to go. It’s not in Durham/Chapel Hill, but unfortunately there aren’t any good archery outfitters there. NC Hunter Supply has a good selection of modern recurves, and has just got a few new longbows in stock, though I think they’re all right-handed. The staff is very knowledgeable, and if you are less interested in hunting, you can ask for John Kristoff, who is a certified coach in NFAA and USA Archery.

  2. Hi Ms. Boyden,

I’m currently involved with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. My little brother (11 years old) is interested in taking an archery lesson with you. I have two questions: (1) Do we have to bring our own bows? (2) Would my little brother be able to attend a lesson with me even though I’m not his parent? We could get parental consent if you need it.

    Thanks for your time.

    • Dennis,
A young person may come accompanied by any adult sponsor. You are welcome to bring your little brother if you can help him to be responsible with the equipment. We can provide bows for both of you. Please sign up both people ahead of time if you plan to join us.

      Thanks!

  3. Hi,
I wanted to make sure that I read it right. You do have bows and arrows that can be borrowed? My 13 year old son has been very interested in this for awhile now, but I don’t want to buy the equipment ahead of time until I know he really is interested. I may join in as well. Mom and Son bonding time. :)
    Thank you! Toni

    • Dear Toni,
We have equipment that you may borrow during the archery club. Our equipment is best suited for youth/teens. Adults can use our equipment but may prefer to purchase their own equipment over time. Our recommendation for both youth and adults is to come to the club, practice with our equipment, then make the choice about whether or not you would like to purchase your own. If you decide to buy your own equipment we can also offer suggestions about what to look for. If you would like to come out on Saturday, please register today if you can so that we can keep track of who is coming. Thanks!

  4. Hi Alina,

My 11yo son Isaac and I are excited about your archery club! However, we are going to be out of town for the first meeting on the 22nd. Is it okay for us to miss the first meeting? What is the duration of the club? Will it be going on indefinitely? As beginners, would you recommend that we buy our own equipment or borrow from what you have available? Thanks so much!

    Rachel

    • Dear Rachel,
The archery club will be ongoing as long as there is interest and participation. We have a lot of people getting involved so it will most likely continue indefinitely. It is fine to join us at any time. Newcomers will be welcome at every meeting. You are welcome to use our equipment and at the we can also offer pointers on purchasing your own. We look forward to seeing you soon!

  5. I am interested in archery, but am a complete beginner. Could I drop in on any class or do the classes run in “sessions” where I would need to start from a first class and work my way through?

    Thanks very much!

  6. Hey Alina and all of PWC! I am trying to register for the archery club for this saturday, but the website is not working quite right and would not accept my debit info. Then the option was not available any longer when trying to pay with check. Any tips? See you Saturday?!

I am looking foward to attending and seeing pwc again!

  7. Hello,
My 11 yr old daughter is interested in attending the archery club. She has learned archery in Girl Scouts and has her own bow & arrow and target that she uses (quite safety) at home. I realize that an adult must accompany her to the club given her age, but I am wondering if the adult chaperone is allowed to just be present or are required to also participate?

We are hoping she can begin in January. I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Thank you!
